2. The "Terrible" Truth About Masculinity

Masculinity, you'll discover in this collection, is not something to be disparaged or thrown away...

Rather, it's a gift.

It can be seen in the father, whose kids have a glow in their hearts and feel bold in his presence.

It can be seen in the brave and loved leader who blesses those he leads and celebrates their successes.

It can be seen on a grateful deathbed, where an old man looks back with no regrets on his mind or in his belly.

He did good. And, he knows it.

Yes.

Masculinity, when properly cultivated, is a great gift to the world.

But you will only discover this gift in the last place most men today will look...

Within.

3. The Hero's Journey

In a time when you're told to only look outside yourself for answers, the "call" is coming from a different world.

Beckoning you to build a bridge between the two...

To take control of the four winds within -- the Warrior, Magician, Lover, King...

And direct them into a vision.

To unlock the potential which has yet to be made manifest.

This is the paradigm-shifting hero's journey, hidden in all your favorite books, stories, and blockbuster movies.

The Journey to reclaim your power.

Discover your path.

And reclaim your powers of the King, Warrior, Magician, and Lover.

[Note: I've launched a letter for updates on the book and beyond -- "99 Kings." Sign up and I'll send three of the 12-book collection.]

Once upon a time...

I was lucky enough to find myself in a position where all paths ahead led to hell.

And going back was an even worse hell.

I was in a place where I HAD to begin to change.

The cosmic alarm clock rang for me and said...

Either rise up, grow up... or die.

Yes.

You only get so many wake up calls in life.

So, for just a moment...

Slow down.

Look around.

Consider that...

Perhaps...

This is one of those rare moments.

Where you're presented with a simple choice.

The blue pill or the red one.

RED PILL: Rise up and become who you are meant to be, untethered from the fashionable opinions of our age.

OR...

BLUE PILL: Play small, give away your power, define yourself by mob demand, and live from a swarming center of sobbing chaos and fear.

THE ANTIDOTE

Masculinity is a GIFT. Not something to be disparaged or chucked off the Grand Canyon.

Nor does it need to be “redefined” for a more “Woke” age.

It is something, rather, alongside full femininity, to be deeply honored.

Masculinity, when properly cultivated, is a great boon for the world.

But you will only discover this gift in the last place most men today will look — within.

There, you will discover your Great Center...

Your Inner Kingdom.

Be warned: On this journey, you might have to face the 4 great dragons of our age...

The Egregious Egregore of Nihilism...

The Great Gorgon of Grandiosity....

The Harrowing Hydra of Temptation...

And, yes, even the Charming Chimera of Depravity.

INTRODUCTION

EXCERPT:

The Western World is suffering a sickness, a deep, festering wound it refuses to offer even a wince. It’s a dangerous thing indeed when a wound is so common people begin to forget there’s a problem.

This hidden sickness is to be seen, says author Robert A. Johnson, “on the face of almost any man who passes the street; the ache of life, the anxiety, dread, loneliness, the corners of the mouth pointing down.”

It is sniffed as spoiled creative milk and rotted out hulls of potential. It is heard as the wild, primal screams deep inside man’s DNA, traveling all the way back to the two million year-old Warrior within.

It is felt as an abyssal apathy, an Egregore of Nihilism… a great void, maw gaping wider, teeth glaring, ready to swallow you whole…

If you listen close, you’ll hear this wound howling.

Shh… Wait. Hear that?

The howling is saying something. It says it’s looking for a journeyer. It is calling for a Hero.

It says it’s… it’s calling for you.

BOOK 1
THE BOOK OF THE HERO

History follows a "code," a pattern.

A pattern of rising and falling, death and rebirth.

This pattern presses down on us a structure — what historians William Strauss and Neil Howe call “turnings.”

In their book, The Fourth Turning, Strauss and Howe explain this cyclical nature of societies...

They also show why Millennials are destined to become the "Hero Generation."

Each society goes from a first-generation turning of High (Ordinary World) to a fourth-generation Crisis (Ordeal).

In the fourth turning, the crisis, the Hero Generation always emerges.

It MUST.

We are inside that fourth turning, my fellow Millennial Man. And it beckons us.

Millennials are the Hero Generation  — called to build the new systems while the old ones fall.

But are they up to the task?

BOOK 2
THE BOOK OF TRIBE

Your journey ahead is full of dragons, enemies, traps, pretty women just outside your reach, revolving bookcases and panic rooms.

The first leg of your journey, and perhaps the most important, is to begin thinking about — and forming — your own Tribe.

A fellowship.

Mentors and allies will come in handy.

Don’t fool yourself into thinking you can… or have to… do it alone.

Help is on the way.

And, trust me, you’ll need it.

Mentors in this book include...

James Altucher

Logocentrifugal

The Gentleman Mystic

Cam Duncan

And more...

BOOK 3
THE BOOK OF MYTH

“There is one indispensable, although strange and hidden work you have to do in secret: your most important work, your masterpiece.” - C.G. Jung

This is the part of the journey where you must slip out of the Ordinary World and venture down into the rabbit hole.

Not to worry. We’ll rope you in softly, starting with the obvious:

Every life has an inner-world and an outer-world.

The ancient Greeks understood that all parts of the inner-world needed to be honored.

They worshiped these parts as autonomous gods and goddesses.

Myths, to them, were revelations of the inner-world.... they tell us how these "gods" in our psyches function.

The Greeks knew that if you ignored any of these gods, they would turn against you — perhaps even try to destroy you.

The Book of Myth is your introduction to the "gods" within...

What we now know as "archetypes."

Namely, the King, Warrior, Magician, Lover & Trickster.

BOOK 4
THE BOOK OF SEPARATION

You're standing in front of an ancient temple.

A ferocious demon guards the door.

One hand is held up in a gesture that says, “STOP!”

The other hand, if you look closer, invites you in.

This "demon" is the Threshold Guardian of the Hero’s Journey.

And his message is clear:

Those put off by his appearance are not welcome.

Those who see past the superficial and scary, and can see the gift the Guardian is hiding in plain view, will be allowed to enter.

Like the Sphinx who presents Oedipus with a riddle before he can continue his Journey…

You too will meet the Threshold Guardians who appear to block your path.

These Guardians might appear as enemies...

But, look closer, you might find they become your greatest allies.

BOOK 5
THE BOOK OF SHADOWS

How does it feel to be a villain?

To be the “bad guy” in the story.

If you don't know, get ready to be villainized.

The most dangerous of men are those who believe they're harmless.

To see how you’re capable of being the bad guy is the first and major step to psychological maturation.

In this book, we'll explore your Shadow self.

You'll discover that...

"To the degree that you’re conscious that the evil or the exotic is just as much in you as it is in the other...

"Is the degree to which you’re not likely to project it outward, on some ever-changing scapegoat...

It is the degree to which you are an integrated, authentic individual."

BOOK 6
THE BOOK OF MAGIC

“The archetype of the magician teaches us about creation, about our capacity to bring into being what never was there before, about claiming our roles as cocreators of the universe.” - Carol Pearson

To access the Magician is to adventure into the world of ideas, to become a student of all kinds of hidden and secret knowledge and take part in the constant process of creation.

Magicians do not try to force social change, because they recognize that people need to take their journeys in order to be able to live in a human and peaceful world.

But, that said, the Magician is a great initiator of change.

Says one 99 Things mentor, Tom van der Lin, of Ideas of Old:

"This is often achieved through the process of initiation, in which the Magician is not only a student, but also a master. In Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey, these are the mentors who guide the protagonist from the ordinary world into the special one where transformation takes place."

BOOK 7
THE BOOK OF THE SPEAR

To identify as a Warrior is to say; ‘I am responsible for what happens here,’ and ‘I must do what I can to make this a better world for myself and for others.’

This also implies claiming authority.

Warriors change their worlds by asserting their will upon them.

The important question here is how to know what aggressiveness is appropriate under the circumstances?

They do so, as Moore and Gillette describe it, through clarity of thinking;

"The warrior is always alert. He is always awake. He is never sleeping through life. He knows how to focus his mind and his body."

These qualities require continuous awareness and attention, and so to develop and maintain them, the Warrior trains.

BOOK 8
THE BOOK OF LOVE

The lover in his fullness is deeply sensual; sensually aware and sensitive to the physical world in all its splendor.

He feels compassionately and empathically united with all around him. He not only sees the world in a grain of sand, he feels it is so.

He feels the joy of life as well as the painfulness of being alive, both for himself and for others.

All of us, when we stop doing and just let ourselves be and feel without the pressure to perform, are accessing the Lover.

Accessing the Lover makes us feel related, connected, energized, compassionate and romantic about our lives.

It gives us a sense of meaning. It allows us to shine. Sadly, the attacks on our vitality begin early in our lives, leading to many of us repressing the Lover until it becomes very hard to feel passionate about anything at all.

We may even think that our feelings are annoying encumbrances and inappropriate for a man, but as Moore and Gillette argue; “let us not surrender our lives!”

Let us find the spontaneity and joy of life inside ourselves. Then not only will we live our lives more abundantly, but we will enable others to live as well, perhaps, for the first time.

BOOK 9
THE BOOK OF THE 4 GODDESSES

The Anima, according to Carl Jung, is the inner feminine side of a man. Whether he likes it or not, every man has this inner-feminine aspect.

Jung wrote of four stages of the anima, personified as Eve, Helen, Mary and Sophia -- 4 goddesses of the psyche.

In the first stage, Eve  is indistinguishable from the personal mother. The man cannot function well without a close tie to a woman.

In the second, personified in Helen of Troy, the anima is a collective and ideal sexual image.

The third, Mary brings with her the capacity for lasting relationships and devotion.

Fourth stage, Sophia manifests as a guide to the inner life, as a mediator to your inner world. She helps you in your search for meaning, and is your muse in your creative endeavors.

In this book, along this vein, we have invited four Goddesses to share with us their wisdom...

Dr. Taylor Burrowes - "The Man In You"

My Playboy's Bunny - "The Seven Sexy Virtues"

Amy Tez - "Rise Up!"

& Vera Mistral - "The True Meaning of Success"

BOOK 10
THE BOOK OF THE CROWN

The King archetype is primal in each man and is also referred to as the King energy or the Father energy.

Fully accessing this archetype is said to be the closest a man can come to divinity or Godhood.

As the name suggests, the King archetype is historically speaking most clearly demonstrated by men in the role of kings, emperors and other rulers whose task it was to channel this archetype to the people of the realm. In essence; they were the link between the human world and the divine one.

Accessing the archetypical king is done by performing two functions: the first one is ordering and the second one is providing fertility and blessing.

The King is the central archetype, which is often visualized by the central place from which the king oversees and rules his world, with the world being defined as that part of reality that is ordered and organized by the King. Outside of his influence lies non-creation, chaos and the demonic.

The first task of the King is to know where the Kingdom begins and where it ends, be it the North of Westeros… or the Home of the Apes, the king’s kingdom is always clearly defined.

BOOK 11
THE BOOK OF REVELATION

Says Eivind Skjellum, of Reclaim Your Inner Throne:

I don’t want to be crude here, but let’s call a spade a spade: If you don’t believe that negotiations of power are at the very core of your life, you are likely deluded and/or utterly dominated by those who are comfortable wielding it.

As professor of psychology Jordan Peterson points out, if you aren’t capable of being a little dangerous, you will be the serfs of those who are.

There is arguably no force in human nature – apart, perhaps, from the drive to procreate – that shapes our lives more than the struggle for power.

Because in the Outer Throne paradigm, nobody feels fully empowered. There is always some person, organization, religion or country out there that represents a threat to me.

There is always someone who wants what I have, and who is willing to do nasty things to get it.

It doesn’t matter if I’m a janitor, a busker, a CEO, a Hollywood movie star, a King or a president; as long as I haven’t reclaimed my inner throne, I will not feel fully at home in the world.

BOOK 12
THE BOOK OF THE GIFT

Jed Diamond of Men Alive fame:

Manhood today is maligned and misunderstood.

Some believe maleness itself is inherently destructive and should be eliminated.

In his book, The End of Manhood, John Stoltenberg says that the notion of manhood “is a sham, a trap, and those who would redeem it are kidding themselves, for manhood is a mask, incompatible with truly human selfhood.”

Others view maleness as being superfluous. This idea is reflected in the witticism, “A woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle.” Some view maleness as being unsuited for today’s world.

I have a different view. I think men are good and can become great. Men are not better than women, but there are important differences between males and females. Today, good men are needed more than ever.

As my colleague Charles Eisenstein recognizes, it is time for men to come together at this time of peril to help bring about “the more beautiful world our hearts know is possible.”

WHO AM I?

My name is Chris Campbell.

I am your archetypal Herald — tasked to call you to adventure and guide you through your Hero’s Journey.

If you are Neo, I am the White Rabbit tattooed on that lady’s neck. If you are James Bond, I am, I suppose, M. If you are Charlie Bucket, well, then I am the golden ticket to Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory.

The Herald’s job — whether it be a person, object or force of nature — is to announce the arrival of an inciting incident which will send (or, in some cases, violently thrust) the Hero (you) off into a new world.

I will be by your side, nudging you along. Lighting up the path through the journey, to the holy grail…

Your greatest gifts.

That which will bring out the best in yourself, out of which will transform you into an overwhelming force for good.
